LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Jan. 28, 2016 – The 2016 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna has come and gone, but the race weekend continues to blanket the community with warm wishes.
As one of the largest sporting events in Central Florida, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna draws more than 100,000 fans, spectators and runners from around the world.
While runners were challenging themselves to achieve their personal best, some participants also helped the local community by literally donating the clothes off their back. Many runners wear layers prior to their races to keep warm in the early morning hours and shed the items as they make their way through the race routes. More than 7,000 pounds of cold weather apparel – long-sleeved t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and gloves – was collected along the race courses and laundered by Disney textile services, and it will be delivered to Harvest Time International, an organization dedicated to assisting Central Florida families in need.
“This generous clothing donation will allow us to provide hope and warmth for families who are struggling to meet their basic needs,” said Dr. John Murphy, president and founder of Harvest Time International. “We are fortunate to have Disney as a champion for our community.”
