LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., – Jan. 30, 2016 – As the sun rose over the shores of Camp Boggy Creek on the chilly morning of Saturday, Jan. 28, its rays revealed a force of more than 100 Disney VoluntEARS, equipped and ready to perform duties ranging from housekeeping, to landscaping, painting and more. And as the sun got ready to set, the camp looked refreshed and beautiful, ready to welcome new summer campers.
Since its founding in 1996, Walt Disney World Resort has been a supporter of Camp Boggy Creek, a summer retreat designed to enhance the lives of children living with life threatening illnesses. The site offers the opportunity for these campers to learn, play and grow together while creating life-long memories.
It is a company tradition to help create a better, brighter tomorrow for Central Florida nonprofit organizations like Camp Boggy Creek. Disney VoluntEARS are part of the legacy that inspires hope through the many hours they dedicate in the community. The annual Disney Grants further the ability to strengthen Central Florida and their families. A little Disney magic is also created every year as Mickey Mouse and his pals visit the campers.
“I think one of the reasons the camp has survived for 20 years, and will continue for many years onward, is that we’ve had good community supporters, Disney has been one of those important supporters helping us keep the success going,” said Ron Roux, Camp Boggy Creek Facilities Director.
Two inspiring Cast Members, James Mattfield and Duane Eastberg, have volunteered at Camp Boggy Creek for more than 20 years, demonstrating the ultimate dedication and passion Disney Cast Members have for their community.
When asked why he supports Camp Boggy Creek, Mattfield said, “I consider myself a champion for children, especially the ones here, the ones that can’t help themselves. I just enjoy the work and everything I do here.” Mattfield’s passion has gone a long way, inspiring over 50 VoluntEARS from areas across Walt Disney World Resort to join in and provide year-round support.
Walt Disney World Resort is committed to investing and improving the quality of life for its community with a special interest in providing meaningful interactions between children and families. In 2016, Disney contributed nearly $33.9 million in cash and in-kind donations aimed at strengthening the local community.
